Fireplace dampers have a very important function for a house but having a damper that is either missing or broken does not affect the safety of a fireplace. A damper is a mechanism that is installed inside a chimney that will open and close the flow of air to the outside. It needs to be open when the fireplace is being used and you would like to be able to close it when you are not using the fireplace. A properly installed damper blocks airflow in and out o the house. If you have a broken or missing damper than all the warm air in the house is getting out and cold air is getting in. It is essentially a door that you can close on the inside of the chimney. I see a lot of people that feel cold air inside a family room but cannot pinpoint where it is coming from. A lot of the time it is because of a faulty damper. The dampers we install are all stainless steel and have a lifetime warranty. They are top mounted meaning the mechanism is on the top of the chimney but the control is inside the fireplace. They are very easy to use and provide a perfect seal for efficiency. The money spent on a damper system is saved quickly in lost PGE bills. The damper systems are generally $479 depending on the fireplace and that includes a spark arrestor. Some over sized fireplaces might have a small increase in price but that is rare.
